Komtar is not always the tallest building in Penang. This (now nameless) building that stands on the junction of Lebuh Pantai and Lebuh Acheh was.

Gudang Acheh was constructed by Tengku Syed Hussein Al Aidid, a successful and influential trader as well as the founder of the Acheen Street Mosque. He constructed Gudang Acheh as his spice godown-cum-office on the waterfront.

Also known as "Rumah Tinggi" in malay and 'kuan lau' in Hokkien (both meaning tall house), Gedung Acheh served as a prominent landmark for spice traders.
