Penang Remembers HRH Prince Philip

The team at Penang Hidden Gems wishes to convey our sincere condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her children, her extended family, and the people of the United Kingdom over the passing of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Penang remembers when the young Prince Philip visited Penang in 1956. HRH Prince Philip visited Penang Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) at Jalan Mesjid Negeri (behind our State Mosque) on Wednesday, 31st October 1956, several months before Malaya's independence.

The last High Commissioner, Sir Donald McGillivray, met the Prince in Penang, and they visited the Volunteer Headquarters where he met the YWCA President, Mrs. Goh Heng Chong.

The YWCA members prepared a traditional cooking demonstration for the Prince, who tried and enjoyed the recipe for Pieti (Nyonya Top Hat) and took the recipe home to England. From 1956 to 1957, Prince Philip traveled around the world aboard the newly- commissioned HMS Britannia. During the trip, he opened the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, visited the Antarctic, and became the first royal to cross the Antarctic Circle.
