Can you imagine trying to put out fire happening on a skyscraper high above the ground?
In 1983, whilst still under construction, a fire broke out at the 43rd. floor of KOMTAR Tower, destroying the floors above. Firemen were unable to douse the flames as it was too high up. A helicopter hovering over the area had to move away as it fanned more fire.
Many Penangites still remembers that incident, as they look at the building from below, and some wishing that the wind will change to rain to kill off the fire.
The fire eventually burnt out after eight hours. The skyscraper was still under construction at that time and it was one of the worst high-rise fires in the country at that time.
