National track-and-field athlete Rabia Abdul Salam was a promising young athlete from Air Itam, Penang. In 1990 and 1991, Rabia was the Penang Sportswoman of The Year.
Her greatest accomplishment was when she won the gold medal for Malaysia in the 1993 SEA Games for the 4x400m event in Singapore together with Josephine Mary, R. Shanti and G. Shanti. Her time of 52.56 in the womenโs 400m which was set in 1993 during the Asian Athletics Championships still stands in the Malaysia athletics record to this day.

Unfortunately, before the star athlete could take Penang and Malaysia's track arena to greater heights, Rabia committed suicide (by ingesting poison) in February 1994.
She was only 20 years old.

Her death raised speculations, especially on why she committed suicide.
The forgotten legend would have been a great Olympian.
