A clay ware shop in Bukit Mertajam that exist since 1907. The multilingual shop sign has Jawi, Tamil and Chinese. This is because clay pots was a popular cookware in every family and also plays an important role in our custom and tradition. The signage was made by the grandfather of the owner during pre-colonial period where Jawi Malay was still commonly used.


Translation of Jawi: Sin Weng Heng

A textile store that started in Lebuh Chulia, Penang since 1962 where Penang was a free port. Their customers were mostly Malay and Indian, hence the combination of Jawi, Tamil and English in the shop sign. Even people from mainland came to buy (and smuggle ) Sarung, Batik, Sari because itโ€™s cheap and the custom was not strict during that time.
