An approximation of the Penang Woman has been released in an article published on 5 August 2022.
The Penang Woman skeleton was uncovered when the area was being dug up to lay the foundations for the Guar Kepah archaeological gallery in 2017. It was the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐚.
According to the paper published just a few days ago, the age of death for the Penang Woman is around 40 years old and the chronometric dating shows the Penang Woman was buried around 5700 years ago.

Such a great accomplishment for the Penang archeological field and a big applause for the researchers! This effort definitely promotes digital documentation in the conservation of human remains in Malaysia!
Those who are keen to check out the archeological site and a replica of the Penang Woman can head to Galeri Warisan Guar Kepah.
The original “Penang Woman” is still being carefully conserved in USM as it has to be in a temperature and humidity controlled environment, which means the skeleton currently showcased at the gallery is a replica of the original.

Figure 5. The steps of forensic facial approximation. (A) The reconstructed skull was incomplete; thus it was filled with a 3D mesh from a virtual donour (B). A profile line of the face was drawn (C) and the frontal projections was generated (D). Anatomical deformation technique was performed to approximate the face (E). Comparable nasal deformity was observed (F,G). A series of structural modifications was performed to adapt with the projections (H,I). The hairs were added to complete the facial approximation (J).
